*it's been a rather hectic bus trip from the airport; rather than going straight home, Laertes has plucked up Bernardo and taken him to the middle of town--they've got a date with the local community musical, in which his daughter is to sing as Young Cossette*

*with some cajoling, Laertes has convinced Bernardo to take a hotel room with him for a weekend's trip--the place he chooses is on the Danish coast, but not near any popular beaches; it's mostly a quiet, working-class sort of town, not the place where tourists go*

*it's been nearly eight months since last he visited Bernardo; he still writes letters regularly, mostly about what he's been writing or thinking--recognizes that Bernardo might not want to hear about his family, although they remain the most important part of his life. he'll end his most recent letter with I miss you, and post it*

*Grenoble is only a few hours away from Avignon; it's quite easy to follow the river south and then simply be in the square before the Palace of the Popes--he'll turn to Bernardo, smiling as they leave the shade of a tree* What do you think--should we play tourists, or would you like to wander around as though you were a local?

Of course, it's a matter of technique as much as location.

*theirs is not a large house, and not in perfect repair--but it does have a small yard and more than one room, and it's only a minute or so of brisk jogging from the river. it is also, at this moment, mostly unfurnished and positively strewn with boxes*

*wakes late, blinking against the light streaming through the curtains, and pulls the blankets over his head*

*(the spring stretches long and lonely; in early February, Laertes meets a pleasant fellow of about his age who works as a clerk for the college, and they go out for dinner a few times before the experience grows awkward and too-intimate. he understands that he is craving intimacy, and that letters and calls simply do not suffice--in late March, he lets himself kiss a visiting Spanish scholar, and discovers that he does not regret it terribly much. they take the visitor's honorarium and have dinner at a fine restaurant in town, then return to the hotel and kiss one another until they can scarcely breathe.

it eases him to have done it. he sees no reason to tell Bernardo about it.)

when the spring term ends at Bernardo's college, Laertes will be waiting for him at the airport, ready to fold him close and kiss his hair*
riotous_head: (Amused)
*the sea breeze smells of salt and sulfur; the sand is a pure, smooth white strewn with stones. Laertes is ignoring this in favor of an exciting book of poetry that he's picked up in a used bookstore on the trip down to the coast*

*Grenoble, France--nearly all of Bernardo's things have been unpacked, the furniture has been moved and moved again, and there is now substantially less available space in Laertes's little studio apartment. he stands with his hands on his hips, surveying the tight-packed space* We're going to need a bigger place eventually.

*following Guildenstern's not-advice, he'll consider calling Reynaldo--not in the sense of formulating a plan, but allowing the idea to niggle at him. it's the weekend; he no longer has a case--

--well, why not? he'll dial the other man's number*

*thoughtful* I suppose I like the simplicity of it. It doesn't really change our emotional dynamic at all.
riotous_head: (Default)
*it's been a while since he's called Bernardo--not overlong, but about a week; he remembers on the bus ride back from work, and dials Bernardo's number while he tries to get warm on the bus seat*
riotous_head: (Default)
This man's athleticism is staggering. And yes, that's why I'm watching it.

*a few weeks have passed since Laertes has arrived in Denmark; he is almost used to the conversations that go nowhere and the rare, cherished moments when all things seem at peace. he spends most of his time staying in, just reading or working on a chapter--and although it is a beautiful Saturday morning, he may be found curled up on the couch with a book and a pen*
riotous_head: (Sword Tricks)
*it's summer in Grenoble; the day is beautiful and clear and warm. there are young women laughing to each other as they bicycle through the streets, and there are flowers growing in planters before little family shops--

--and Laertes storms home in a state of incoherent rage, a poster clutched in his hand. it advertises a speech to be given at the university--by King Henry V of England*
riotous_head: (Do You See This O God?)
*Laertes has made an appointment to meet his father, at some tasteful coffeehouse where one mightn't encounter gossiping undergraduates or mothers buying five-year-olds hot chocolate. he arrives a little later than the appointed time, glancing about in hopes of seeing Polonius at a table*
riotous_head: (Default)
*there's frost lining the flowers on campus, and an appreciable chill to the air--it's an early cold snap, and Laertes is bundled up tightly in coat and jacket, scarf and gloves. he wears his hair loose, more so that it will insulate his ears than for vanity's sake, and his students have already laughed at him for it. he's ducking into the coffee shop by campus on his way home, intent upon a large hot chocolate*
riotous_head: (Default)
*it's autumn, and Laertes is teaching undergraduates for the first time in years. since the modern languages office's photocopier has broken, he's nipped over to the history building to run off a few handouts for his students--his hands and his cheek are ink-stained, and he's wearing a terribly stodgy-looking jacket with reinforced elbows (also ink-stained). despite the hassle, he seems quite contented*
